From the early 1960s, and even earlier, it was quite common in Jamaica for artists to cut their own versions of songs made famous by US performers. That is hardly surprising, given how wildly popular these records were on the island, thanks to the early sound system pioneers who brought in soul, R&B, and pop from the United States.
In this book, we aim to trace the roots of many of those covers and the artists behind them. Because the number of cover versions is so vast, we have limited our selection to songs in the Black Music genre.
