Jamaican-born, Toronto-based gospel-reggae artiste Sone G says leaving Jamaica did not mean leaving the music behind. If anything, the move to Canada has expanded his musical horizons and deepened his appreciation for the reggae sounds that shaped him while growing up in Rocky Point, Clarendon. That evolution is paying off.
His single “Rescue Me” recently captured the 2026 Reggae North Music Award for Best Gospel, following its run to No. 1 on the Reggae North Canadian Top 20 chart. The achievement adds to a growing catalogue that includes “Spirit A Move,” “Find A Way” and “Stronger,” as well as his debut EP, New Man, released in July.
For Sone G, that exposure has not diluted his identity. Instead, it has helped him develop what he describes as a more global sound while retaining the identity he grew up with.
Born Cecil Wilson, Sone G was raised around Jamaica's sound-system culture and under the strong Christian influence of his grandmother. Those two worlds now converge in his music, where reggae provides the foundation and gospel provides the message. While gospel is at the centre of his musical mission, Sone G's appreciation for Jamaican music extends firmly into dancehall.
